Everything You Need to Know: Scream Season 3 & MTV’s Halloween Special

Things aren’t looking great for the Scream series. Despite what we considered a strong season 2, the ratings for the series declined leaving fans wondering what would become of the Lakewood survivors and if the show would even be renewed for a third season.

The Good News: The show has been renewed for a third season and MTV is bringing fans a 2 hour Halloween special airing tonight, October 18th at 9pm ET.

The Bad News: Because of season 2’s low ratings, the Halloween special is definitely a test to see if the show can bring in an audience and bridge the storyline for a new season. MTV announced that the order for season 3 will consist of 6 episodes. Season 1 consisted of 10 episodes, and season 2 upped the order to 12 episodes, excluding the 2 part Halloween special.

Another bit of bad news is the overhaul in production staff for season 3. Season 2 showrunners, Richard Register and Michael Gans, won’t be returning. Although no announcements have been made about their replacements, this will be the second time the show has had a creative switch. Season 1 showrunners Jill Blotevogal and Jaime Paglia left after the first season as well. With a new staff of producers and writers, it’s a mystery what direction the show will go in next.

The Scary News: With the fate of the show on the line, we have a lot to look forward to from tonight’s Halloween special.

An official synopsis (with **SPOILERS** if you haven’t finished season 2 yet) describes what the Lakewood teens will face in tonight’s special titled “Halloween” and “Halloween II”:

“Just in time for Halloween, MTV unleashes a horrifying new 2-hour special that picks up eight months after Kieran’s (Amadeus Serafini) arrest. Emma (Willa Fitzgerald) is struggling to focus on her future and who she really is after everything that has happened. Meanwhile, Noah (John Karna) and Stavo (Santiago Segura) have combined forces to create a best-selling graphic novel based on the Kieran Wilcox murders and Audrey (Bex Taylor-Klaus) has found herself in a new relationship. Since the first anniversary of Piper’s killing spree is upon us, Emma and her friends are determined to be as far from Lakewood as possible and Stavo has the perfect solution. He and Noah are researching for their next graphic novel, a Lizzy Borden-esque legend on Shallow Grove Island, and suggest the rest of the group come along for the weekend. Just when they thought they were safe, the Lakewood survivors find themselves in another bloody standoff, leaving them to wonder – is an old legend coming back to life or has murder followed them from Lakewood?”

  1. I’ll be watching it on Netflix tomorrow and I’m soooo excited. I really liked season 1 but I found season 2 stronger. I loved the usage of classic horror titles for episode titles. I’ll be really sad if it doesn’t continue! My husband and I just binge watched the first 2 seasons last week – although I’d already seen them all 🙂

    1. We really enjoyed season 2 too! The classic horror titles for each episode was a great addition. We can’t wait to see if the Halloween special delivers. Hoping it opens the characters up to new storylines for the third season. Thank you for commenting! Let us know what you think of the Halloween special once it airs!
