The Ultimate Halloween Movies List: 70+ Movies to Spook Yourself This Halloween

Our Halloween movies list with 70+ Halloween movies from the family-friendly to the horrific PLUS a printable calendar to plan your Halloween movie marathon!

It’s that time of year where everyone is getting into the spooky spirit, rewatching Halloween movies from childhood or having nightly horror marathons with friends.

Watching Halloween movies is one of our favorite parts of the Halloween season. October is the perfect opportunity to indulge in all the nostalgia-filled holiday classics and scare yourself silly with your favorite horror films.

On an episode of our favorite horror podcast, Shock Waves, hosts Rebekah McKendry, Rob Galluzzo, and Elric Kane countdown to Halloween with 31 horror films they enjoy watching every October. Each host picks a theme for the month (fun horror movies or horror anthologies, for example), and they discuss which choices will make up their Halloween movie marathon.

Our friend and fellow Halloween-loving blogger, The Spooky Vegan, released her list of 31 Halloween Movies earlier this month, and we love following along with her nightly selections on Instagram. We love her “Ultimate List of Halloween-themed Movies” because, like us, she agrees that a list of “Halloween movies” is different than a list of “horror movies”.

Most horror fans are watching scary movies all year. Come October, everyone starts rounding up their list of Halloween movies, and most of the titles on so many lists are just scary movies that have nothing to do with the holiday itself.

Since Halloween programming on TV often leaves us wanting more, we made a list of all the movies we hope to watch before Halloween season is over.

We did slip a few in there that may not have Halloween in them but that we remember watching every October growing up. Every list will be different. Your list can include whatever choices bring back that signature Halloween feeling for you.

Here are a few to add to your Halloween movies list this year!

  1. Your lists are like a must watch of all the Halloween hits! Two I love are the original Halloween and Trick ‘r Treat, but I have so many more.

  2. Your lists are awesome and I love how you categorized them. There are Halloween movies that feel like a tradition to me. I have way too many movies, but my top ones that I always, ALWAYS watch are Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas (it’s funny because I could watch it for Christmas season as well lol), Hocus Pocus (of course because who doesn’t love those Sanderson witches?), Night of the Living Dead (that little girl STILL scares me silly, fav line? “They’re coming to get you Barbara……….”), House on Haunted Hill (1959, ghosts, hysteria and Vincent Price) and my final in my top 5 category- When A Stranger Calls (I scare myself silly when I am in a room by myself and watching this one. Whenever my dog would suddenly leap up on me watching this one or when the phone rings, I jump 5 feet in a scream. Then, I laugh afterwards).

    1. Thank you so much, Amber!

We watch Nightmare Before Christmas every Halloween AND again at Christmas too!

Of course, it would not be Halloween without watching Hocus Pocus.

I love When a Stranger Calls SO much! Do you prefer the original or remake? We enjoy both, but the original gives us chills! Carol Kane is phenomenal. “Have you checked the children?!”

  3. I’m pretty sure I have the remake one. The one with the cell phones which made it more scary for me. I’m going to have to find the original now that you mentioned it, What year was it?

  4. Yes! Thank you and I will definitely check up on the 1979 When A Stranger Calls. Another movie that makes me NEVER want to be a babysitter is Babysitter Wanted (2008).
