Hocus Pocus Halloween Party

How to throw a Hocus Pocus Halloween Party with recipes and decor inspired by the beloved 1993 film.

In 1993 Hocus Pocus was released to mixed reviews and below average ticket sales. Since then though, the film has gone on to become a Halloween classic. Hocus Pocus is not only adored by fans, it is required viewing each Halloween season.

We knew we had to watch the movie again this Halloween season (of course, we watch it every year!), but we wanted to take it a step further.

One of the reasons the film has such a legacy is because it perfectly it captures the spirit and atmosphere of Halloween. We wanted to recreate the magic of the film, but we’d have to do it without traveling to Salem where the movie was filmed.

If we wanted to bring the movie magic into our own home, we decided we’d have to throw our own mini Hocus Pocus Halloween party.

For the centerpiece of the serving table, we enlisted the help of a friend to recreate the infamous one-eyed spell book and black flame candle. The cauldron was a Target Dollar Spot find from Halloween 2018, and the fog was created with an affordable mist maker from Amazon.

For our decor, we knew we couldn’t have a Hocus Pocus party without an appearance from the one-eyed spell book and the black flame candle. We enlisted the help of a friend to recreate the iconic props from the movie.

The spell book was created using paper mache and adhering plastic snakes and an eyeball to an existing cardboard book prop. The book was finished off with a few coats of paint and a print out from the internet glued to the inside.

We completed the decor on the serving table by adding battery-powered candles and artificial flowers in black and purple with orange sprinkled throughout.

Tex Mex Party Dip with Homemade Hocus Pocus Tortilla Chips

We usually make a Tex Mex layer dip for Halloween parties and decided to make our own tortilla chips using Halloween cookie cutters: Binx (a cat), a cauldron, Billy’s gravestone, and a broom.

Give the cut tortillas a light brush with oil, a sprinkle of salt, and place in a 400 degree oven for 5 minutes on each side.

We followed a traditional Tex Mex layered party dip recipe: vegetarian refried beans, cheddar cheese (or vegan shreds), fresh guacamole, sour cream (or non-dairy alternative), and fresh pico de gallo.

We added a cup of pretzel rods to the table because they look so much like witch broomsticks, and they taste delicious with the dip.

Sanderson Sisters Crispy Rice Treats

We followed a traditional Rice Krispy treat recipe, but we wanted our treats to have a note of Halloween flavor. A few caramel cubes, a sprinkle of candy corn, and some white chocolate chips melted in butter served as the base before mixing in the rice cereal.

Scoop out 3 mounds from the cereal mixture onto wax paper. Allow the mixture to set by resting at room temperature for a few minutes before sculpting into the Sanderson sister silhouettes.

The final step: we melted white chocolate in 3 separate bowls before dying with food coloring. We dipped each treat in the melted, dyed chocolate to create the hair. Set the treats on wax paper in the refrigerator for 20 minutes after dipping to set the chocolate.

Black Flame Candle Cheese Bread

We took packaged pizza dough on parchment paper and topped it with cheese (or cheese alternative of your choosing) and fresh basil.

Then, using the parchment paper, we rolled the pizza dough into a log shape. Unwrapping the dough from the parchment paper, we made incisions into the dough using a sharp knife to mimic the symbols on the black flame candle. We dripped a little olive oil dyed with black food coloring into the cuts.

We used a fresh basil leaf dyed with black food coloring for the flame and served with a traditional marinara sauce dyed with black food coloring.

Hocus Pocus Potion Punch

We rimmed with glasses in melted white chocolate dyed with neon green food coloring. Then we rolled the rims in green sugar before filling with purple acai sorbet, blackberries, and blueberries.

The Hocus Pocus Potion Punch was finished off with little purple drink mix, a dash of lemon lime sparkling soda, and a few ice cubes.

If you’ve ever dreamed of flying away to the magical world of the Sanderson Sisters, grab your broom (or vacuum) and run amuck by hosting a Hocus Pocus party of your own this Halloween!
