Netflix continues adding new horror selections to their library each month, and with so many titles to choose from, it’s easy for a horror fan to experience “decision paralysis” when trying to narrow down what to watch. Each week, we’ll recommend a film from the watchlist to help keep you entertained, and more importantly, sufficiently scared.
This week’s Netflix pick is the recently added It Follows. The film debuted at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival and quickly gained the respect of many genre fans. Like The Babadook and The Witch, the film had a polarizing effect on audiences: to many, it was the best film of the year, and to others, the hype and praise the film received seemed a little too enthusiastic.
We thoroughly enjoyed the film and find that it holds up to multiple viewings, so if you’ve yet to see it or only caught it in theaters, it’s a great choice to add to your Netflix watchlist.
The film stars Maika Monroe as college student Jay who finds herself under the sex-induced curse of a mysterious force that seems to relentlessly stalk its victims before ultimately taking their lives. With the help of her friends, she must fight to discover the killer’s weaknesses if she hopes to avoid the same morbid fate.
Director David Robert Mitchell creates an atmosphere of dread and suspense with a unique visual style (said to be inspired by the works of John Carpenter and George Romero) set against the backdrop of Detroit, Michigan. With an ambiguous time period and few details revealed about the seemingly unstoppable threat, the audience has the opportunity to draw many of its own conclusions about the themes and symbolism in the film.
The real gem, in our opinion, is the synth, 80s-inspired soundtrack from Disasterpeace. Paying homage to influences like John Carpenter for some of the musical cues, the score is instantly iconic and stands out as one of the most noteworthy elements of the film’s success.
